You deserve a break

My computer and my phone both got sick at the same time.  Computer had to go to the hospital.  Phone just went to Urgent Care.  But for about 24 hours I had neither, and I'm still trying to get my computer back to its normal self.  I felt lost.  I felt disconnected.  I felt a little panicked, probably because this wasn't my decision, but was imposed on me.  I can go a couple of days without using either, but it's my choice, and on my time-table. This was not my choice, and the timing was terrible.  But I survived, and I'm slowly making the connections I missed while they were under the weather.

I think this was good for me.  Not only did it dispel my foolish belief that a less-than-one-year-old computer couldn't go down and make me lose everything, so I had better do a better job of backing things up, but it reminded me that it had been a long time since I had taken a digital break.  Breaks are important in all our lives. I find that if I don't take renewal time now and then that is when I get sick, or my back/knee goes out, forcing me to take a break.  In the winter we often get breaks when the weather inserts itself into our plans, but the past few winters have been too warm for that.

It has always fascinated me that the Gospel writers took time to tell us about the times Jesus and the disciples took time off, time away from the crowds.  With all they had to tell us, the inclusion of these stories must not be overlooked.  If the gospels are to show us how Jesus lived so that we might do the same, then that includes break times, renewal times.  It is good for our health, both physical and mental.  It slows our breathing, clears our heads, and often gives us a new perspective.  I highly recommend taking a break, whether digital or otherwise (or all at once).

Loving God, in whom we live and move and have our being, we confess that although we seek to be in you and you in us, we often allow other things to interrupt that flow of mindfulness.  Let us find our rest in you so that we may be better equipped to face the challenges of our days.  And when we find ourselves with break days unexpectedly inflicted upon us, give us grace to fill those empty hours with thoughts of you, and seeking new ways to be in your service.......Amen
